Gabriel Aston

Gabriel Aston – DI.fm/Cream Resident – Releases on Axis/Solar/Adaptor

Nationality: English/Irish/Spanish

Current Residence: Birmingham, United Kingdom

Started Playing: Learned to mix in ’87, started in clubs in ’96

Musical Style: Split down the middle – most of my bookings are based on either funky house, or progressive/tech house, and thus my podcasts reflect that.

Current Setup: 1x Allen & Heath Xone:3D, 2x Pioneer CDJ-1000 Mk2s, 2x Omnitronic Direct Drive Turntables (can’t remember the model number – packed away at present), 1x Hercules MKII MIDI Controller/Soundcard, 1x iPad running Touchable, Native Instruments Traktor Pro, Ableton Live Studio 8 (with Nexus/Edirol/T-RACKS VSTs and more) Adobe Audition 3… Think that is the lot…

Fantasy Mix Train Line Up: Carl Cox – very fortunately had him as my mentor growing up.  Graeme Park – a massive influence on my love of house, and a lovely bloke to boot Ummmm… For my final 3, I’ll pick a few that I haven’t played with yet… Sasha, Digweed, and BT (not strictly a DJ I know)

Gabriel Aston’s Current Top 5

  1. Francesco Gomez – I Can’t Get No Sleep
  2. Erick Morillo & Eddie Thoneick featuring Shawnee Taylor – Live Your Life
  3. James Talk & Ridney featuring Max C – One For Me
  4. Olav Basoski – Give Me
  5. Quinten 909 – Everybody

Gabriel Aston’s All Time Top 5

  • Inner City – Your Love (Serial Diva Paris Is Burning Mix)
  • Hybrid – Symphony
  • Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy
  • Faithless – Insomnia (Armand van Helden Remix)
  • E’voke – Arms of Loren

Most overrated tune of all time: Anything generic on the more recent Hed Kandi stuff after it was sold to MOS… or a lot of tunes on the bigger labels like Toolroom that only sell because of the label, not the music… Toolroom do good stuff, but some pretty mediocre stuff too

Most underrated tune of all time: Inner City’s “Your Love” – it wasn’t their biggest hit but, in my eyes, it was their best

5 words to sum up your DJ career: Been blessed to have it

Do you have anything else to say? Forget about genres – just love the music if it does something to you… oh and support your artists by buying legal copies of records… we don’t live in ivory castles you know 😉
